Getting this wrong means drilling new holes in a solid-core door, and that’s a cost nobody wants.

- The key sticks or requires jiggling. This usually means the cylinder pin chambers are gummed with decade-old lubricant and Manhattan dust, or the keyway has worn from a heavy keyring pulling at the plug. In our experience, this starts around year 12 on Sargent 6600s in buildings near the FDR or West Side Highway where road grit works into the hallway.
- The bolt throws hard or only partway. The strike plate has shifted, or the bolt itself is binding in the door prep. Old buildings settle. In Brooklyn Heights and the West Village we’ve seen door frames tilt enough that a deadbolt that worked fine in 2015 now needs shoulder pressure to close.
- The thumb-turn spins without moving the bolt. The tailpiece connecting the interior turn to the latch mechanism has cracked or slipped its set screw. This is a ten-minute fix if caught early, but owners who force it can strip the cam housing and turn a $180 call into a full replacement.
- The key works from one side only. On single-cylinder Sargents this points to a broken tailpiece or a cam that has rotated 180 degrees inside the housing. It happens when a tenant or housekeeper removes the interior hardware without knowing the tailpiece orientation.
- The deadbolt is loose in the door. The mounting screws have stripped the wood, or the door has swollen and shrunk through enough New York summers that the through-bolts no longer bite. We see this on south-facing doors in Queens and Staten Island where temperature swings are hardest on wood.
