Medeco Deadbolt Installation in New York City, NY | Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of New York City

Medeco Deadbolt Installation: The New York City Owner’s Guide

Medeco deadbolt installation in New York City typically runs $280-$520 for a complete replacement, including the cylinder, bolt assembly, and strike plate alignment, with same-day service available across all five boroughs. We stock Medeco Maxum 11*503 and 11*543 series deadbolts on every truck, along with the full range of rim and mortise cylinders that match older Medeco installations still common in pre-war buildings. Most New York City homeowners realize their Medeco deadbolt is failing when the key starts catching at 10 o’clock or the thumb turn requires two hands to retract the bolt.

Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco has produced several deadbolt lines over the decades, and knowing which one is on your door determines everything from the backset measurement to whether your existing key will still work.

The Maxum 11*500 series is the current residential standard: a 1-inch throw bolt, hardened steel collar, and the classic six-pin sidebar cylinder. Look for the model stamp on the inside edge of the door, just below the latch face. The 11*503 is the single-cylinder version (key outside, thumb turn inside); the 11*543 is the double-cylinder (key both sides), required by New York City code for doors with glass within 40 inches of the lock.

Older installations may use the Medeco 11*010 Original or the discontinued BiLock conversion cylinders that some co-ops in Queens and Brooklyn had installed in the 1990s. These share the same 2-3/8-inch or 2-3/4-inch backset but use a different cam interface. We carry adapter kits for these conversions.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Medeco’s proprietary sidebar pin system means aftermarket cylinders that claim compatibility often fail to achieve the same UL 437 rating. For New York City insurance purposes, especially in rent-stabilized buildings where the carrier requires documented high-security hardware, we install factory-original Medeco cylinders with traceable key codes. Generic “Medeco-compatible” cylinders from online retailers typically lack the hardened inserts and false-gate pinning that make the real thing worth installing.

Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

  • The key sticks or requires jiggling at the 10 or 2 o’clock position. This usually indicates sidebar pin wear or debris accumulation in the keyway. New York City’s particulate-heavy air, especially near construction zones in Manhattan and the South Bronx, accelerates this. The pins no longer align smoothly with the sidebar, creating that familiar catch point.
  • The bolt throws but doesn’t fully retract without pulling the door toward you. This points to strike plate misalignment, often caused by seasonal frame swelling or building settling common in older Brooklyn and Queens frame houses. The bolt is scraping the strike jamb rather than the mechanism failing, but the added friction will destroy the internal cam over time.
  • The thumb turn spins freely without moving the bolt. The tailpiece has sheared or the cam connecting the cylinder to the bolt mechanism has cracked. This is a full disassembly job; the tailpiece on a Maxum is hardened steel, but the cam interface can fail if the bolt has been binding for months.
  • You need to pull the key out slightly to get the final quarter-turn. The bottom pins have worn to a barrel shape rather than maintaining their factory flat. This happens around the 15-year mark in normal use, sooner in high-traffic commercial applications or where duplicate keys have been cut from worn originals at hardware store machines.
  • The deadbolt feels “gritty” when operated. Corrosion in the bolt case from moisture infiltration. We see this regularly in ground-floor installations in flood-prone zones of Gowanus, Red Hook, and along the Rockaway peninsula where salt air penetrates even well-sealed doors.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Medeco Maxum single-cylinder replacement (standard prep) $280-$380 Deadbolt, cylinder with 2 keys, installation, strike adjustment, old hardware disposal
Medeco Maxum double-cylinder replacement $320-$420 As above, plus interior keyed cylinder and code card registration
Mortise cylinder conversion or rim cylinder installation $350-$520 Custom strike fabrication, escutcheon alignment, potential door edge modification
Additional keyed-alike cylinder (same key, second door) $145-$195 Cylinder only, keyed to existing code

The range depends on door condition. A solid wood door with standard 2-1/8-inch crossbore and 1-inch edge bore takes forty minutes. A steel door with a corroded existing installation, or a door that needs the backset converted from 2-3/8 to 2-3/4, runs longer. We quote the full price on the phone before we dispatch. Every Medeco installation carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing.

Seniors and veterans receive a permanent 5% discount. If your previous written estimate from another locksmith exceeds $250, mention our $50 repair credit when you call.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s honest work a homeowner can do and work that wastes a Saturday and damages a $200 cylinder.

Check first: verify your door’s backset (measure from the door edge to the center of the existing crossbore), confirm the face plate is standard 1-inch by 2-1/4-inch, and look for the Medeco model stamp. If all three match a replacement box from the hardware store, the physical swap is straightforward. What isn’t straightforward is the strike plate alignment. A misaligned strike that binds the bolt will destroy the new deadbolt’s internal mechanism within months. We’ve replaced Medeco cylinders that failed in under a year because the strike was off by an eighth of an inch and the owner never noticed the resistance.

The other gotcha: key code registration. Medeco’s restricted keyway system requires authorized dealers to register new codes. A cylinder bought online arrives with no code card, no key control, and no warranty. For New York City co-op and condo boards that track key issuance, this paperwork matters.

We’re not affiliated with Medeco, though we are an authorized dealer and install their hardware to factory specification. If you’re unsure what you’re looking at, call us at (877) 691-7931. We’ll talk through what you have and whether it makes sense for you to handle it.
