Kwikset Lock Rekeying: The New York City Owner’s Guide

Which Kwikset Models This Applies To

Kwikset’s residential line breaks into three families, and the rekeying approach differs for each.

• Standard Kwikset pin-tumbler deadbolts and knobs (660, 980, 740 series): These use a standard 5-pin cylinder with a Kwikset keyway. We rekey these with factory-matched bottom pins and springs. The cylinder housing rarely needs replacement unless someone has forced the wrong key hard enough to shear a pin.
• Kwikset SmartKey cylinders (introduced 2008, now in Gen 1, 2, and 3): These rekey without removing the cylinder, using a reset tool and a functioning key. The catch: if the cylinder has been reset more than five or six times, the sidebar wafer tolerances open up. In Queens and the Bronx, we see this often in pre-war buildings converted to rentals where landlords rekey between every tenant. A SmartKey cylinder with sloppy tolerance will accept neighboring key cuts. We stock replacement SmartKey cylinders on the truck.
• Kwikset Signature Series and Halifax levers: Higher-grade brass construction, same keyway. The rekeying is identical, but the cylinder retention clip is heavier gauge. We match the clip if it has been removed before.

To identify your series: remove the interior thumbturn or lever rose and look for “SmartKey” stamped on the cylinder face, or check the original key for “KW1” or “KW10” stamped near the bow. If your lock was installed by a New York City contractor between 2015 and 2020, odds are 70% it is a SmartKey.

Signs Your Kwikset Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• The key works, but only if you jiggle it. This points to worn pin chambers or a key cut that has drifted from factory spec. In humid summer months, the brass pins in Kwikset cylinders can develop micro-corrosion that exaggerates the problem.
• A new key copy works worse than the original. Hardware store key machines in New York City vary in calibration. A copy with depth errors of even .005 inch will bind in a cylinder that the original key opens smoothly. The cylinder may be fine; the key may be the problem.
• The SmartKey reset tool spins without catching. The internal sidebar has lost spring tension or the wafer stack has shifted. This is not user-serviceable. The cylinder needs replacement, not another reset attempt.
• The lock accepts two different keys. In master-keyed buildings, this may be intentional. In a single-family home, it means pin heights have worn to where neighboring cuts overlap. This is a security failure, not a convenience issue.
• The key turns, but the bolt does not retract. The tailpiece or cam has slipped out of alignment with the cylinder. Rekeying alone will not fix this; the hardware needs inspection.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing a homeowner can safely check: try the lock with the original Kwikset key, not a hardware store copy. If the original works and the copy does not, you need a better key, not a rekey.

Everything else belongs to a trained technician. Rekeying a pin-tumbler cylinder requires a follower tool to keep the top pins and springs under control. Drop a spring into the door cavity of a pre-war Manhattan apartment and you will spend an hour fishing for it. SmartKey cylinders contain a sidebar under spring pressure that can launch components if the reset tool is inserted incorrectly. We have found SmartKey parts scattered inside door frames.
