Abloy Lock Rekeying: The New York City Owner’s Guide

Abloy lock rekeying in New York City typically runs $180-$340 for a standard residential cylinder, with most jobs completed same-day. We stock Abloy-compatible pinning kits and cylinders for the Protec2, Classic, and Sento lines on every truck, so the work gets done in one visit without waiting on parts from Finland. Most owners figure out they need this when their key starts catching at 10 o’clock, or when a tenant, housekeeper, or contractor still has a copy they shouldn’t.

Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Abloy builds three main cylinder platforms you’re likely to find on New York City doors, and each rekeys differently.

Protec2 - the current high-security line with the rotating disc mechanism and the curved keyway. Look for “Protec2” stamped on the key bow and a small “2” inside the Abloy logo on the cylinder face. These use 11 discs and require a factory-authorized pinning kit. We carry Protec2 blanks and the specialized tools on our trucks.

Classic - the older workhorse, still common on pre-2010 commercial doors in Queens and Brooklyn. Keyway is straighter, key head is rectangular with “Abloy” stamped across. Classic cylinders can be rekeyed with quality aftermarket disc stacks that match OEM tolerances, though we source our discs from the same Finnish supplier Abloy uses for its service network.

Sento - the mid-tier line found on many Scandinavian-import apartment doors in Manhattan and Riverdale. Uses a hybrid pin-and-disc system that confuses most locksmiths. We’ve got the Sento pinning kit; most shops in the five boroughs don’t.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Protec2 keys will not enter Classic cylinders, and vice versa, even though the outside of the lock looks similar. If you’re holding a key and wondering which you’ve got, check the bow shape before calling. That saves everyone a trip.

Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of New York City is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Abloy. We source OEM and matched-spec aftermarket parts based on what’s right for the job.

Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • Key sticks or catches at the same rotational point. In a disc-detainer lock like Abloy, this usually means one or more discs have developed a burr or the lubricant has gummed with Manhattan’s summer humidity and winter radiator dust. The lock isn’t broken, but the pin stack is no longer moving freely.
  • Key turns but doesn’t retract the bolt. The tailpiece or cam connecting the cylinder to the locking mechanism has worn or slipped its timing. On Abloy cylinders, this often traces back to a previous rekey where the cam screw wasn’t torqued to spec.
  • You’ve lost track of who has copies. Not a mechanical failure, but the most common reason we rekey. Abloy’s key control is excellent, but only if you know where every copy went. After a renovation, divorce, or staff turnover in a brownstone rental, rekeying restores that control without replacing the hardware.
  • Key requires jiggling or repeated insertion. The disc springs are fatiguing. In New York City’s freeze-thaw cycles, moisture creeps into cylinders, corrodes the springs, and changes their tension. Eventually the discs don’t seat consistently.
  • New key copies don’t work smoothly. If a hardware-store duplicate works poorly while the original works fine, the cylinder may have enough wear that only a factory-cut key with tight tolerances functions. Rekeying to a fresh disc stack resets those tolerances.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Abloy lock rekeying in New York City, here’s what we quote on the phone:

Service Price Range
Standard residential cylinder rekey (1-2 cylinders) $180-$240
High-security Protec2 cylinder rekey $260-$340
Additional cylinders, same visit $65-$95 each
Master key system rekey (commercial) $320-$580
Emergency/same-day surcharge No surcharge - same price

The range depends on cylinder complexity, whether we need to decode an existing key versus working from a lost-key situation, and travel to outer Brooklyn or the Bronx during rush hour. Parts, labor, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise are all included. The price we quote is the price on the invoice. Seniors and veterans take 5% off any repair over $250.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no physical danger in rekeying an Abloy cylinder - no springs under tension, no electrical hazard. But there’s a practical problem: the tools cost more than the service. A proper Abloy disc-detainer pinning kit runs $400-$800, and without the factory decoder or depth keys, you’re working blind.

What you can safely check: confirm the keyway type, look for the model stamp, and verify the cylinder is Abloy-branded rather than a knockoff. What goes wrong with DIY: discs installed backward, wrong disc sequence creating a lock that works with two different keys, or a cylinder reassembled with the tailpiece 180 degrees off.

We’ve had calls from people who spent a Saturday on it and ended up with a lock that worked - but also worked with their old key. That’s not security. That’s a false feeling of it.

Flat price before the truck rolls, and every job backed in writing - that’s how we’ve done it for over 42 years. Call (877) 691-7931 for a free estimate.
